 Q1. What are the most common causes of vaginal itching?

Ans. The most common causes of vaginal itching are infections, namely candidiasis, bacterial vaginosis & trichomoniasis. Sometimes a napkin rash or contact dermatitis may cause itching. In older women, some conditions like lichen sclerosis also cause a chronic itch. Bacterial vaginosis is also a common cause of vaginitis. It is caused by an overgrowth of some bacteria commonly found in the vagina.

Q2. Which STIs can cause vaginal itching? Can douching also cause this symptom, and should it be completely avoided?

 Ans. Sexual activity, especially with multiple partners and without condoms may lead to different vaginal infections which may cause itching. In addition, hormonal imbalance in pregnancy and menopause and change of vaginal acidity during periods may predispose to vaginal infections. Candidiasis, a fungal infection, particularly occurs with the use of tampons, vaginal douching, long-term antibiotic or steroid use, and wearing damp undergarments. Women with a loop or Copper-T inserted are also predisposed to getting vaginal infections.

Q3. Which skin conditions can cause vaginal itching?

Ans. Skin conditions like contact dermatitis or lichen sclerosis could cause itching. Contact dermatitis is an allergic reaction to something that has come in contact with vulva, like synthetic undergarments, deodorants, perfumes, scented/ detergents etc.

Q4. If a woman is suffering from constant vaginal itching, could it mean there is an underlying problem that needs to be addressed?

 Ans. If there is constant or recurrent itching in vagina, a woman must see her gynecologist, who after examination and necessary tests will advise further treatment. Symptom relief is important as vaginal itching can be embarrassing and may disturb your sleep, but more importantly, the underlying cause has to be treated. This makes sure that the cause is eliminated and itching does not recur.
