What to expect during your first visit to the fertility clinic?

Have you been going through a jigsaw of questions in your mind, every time  you decide to visit the fertility clinic? Are you feeling both nervous and  thrilled? Fixing an appointment with your fertility doctor  is the very first positive step towards your baby. Your first visit is an opportunity to clear all your doubts and questions. This first step can be both exciting as well as stressful. If you have been staying with your partner for more than a year, but have still not conceived in spite of not using any birth control, then you have made the right decision to finally visit the fertility clinic.

Here are some of the basic and prime steps that can help you understand your visit better and make it more fruitful. So what should you expect and how can you be prepared from your end?

BRING YOUR PARTNER AND YOUR QUERIES!

The first appointment helps you to build a road map of your fertility journey. Hence, it is recommended to bring your better half along with you. The first visit can take anytime between 30-60 minutes. By the end of it, you will have an in-depth understanding of how your doctor will be proceeding step by step in the treatment process. Do not feel shy to voice your questions. It is important to build that bond of comfort and ease with your fertility doctor. Your fertility team will be asking you many questions to get a clear idea of your fertility status, but it is also equally important   that you ask all that you wish to know.

THE STEPS INVOLVED.

The process starts with an evaluation of your menstrual,  medical and surgical history. You will also be asked questions regarding your previous pregnancies/miscarriages, if any. Make sure to tell your doctor about all the medications you are currently on.  Even the miniscule details are considered while designing your treatment plan. After a detailed history, a gentle pelvic examination is done for better assessment. Any infection, if present is treated prior to start of the treatment.

The doctor may even like to do a baseline ultrasonography in order to assess your ovaries, ovarian reserve (number of eggs in both ovaries) and the uterine cavity (where the pregnancy grows).  You will also be counseled about the testing of the fallopian tubes.  It is called the Hysterosalpingogram.

Basic blood investigations, including  hormone tests are also advised. This helps to screen out any problems that could be a hurdle in the treatment process. The hormone tests are specifically done on day 2/3 of periods to get a vivid idea of how your ovaries function.

MEN NEED EVALUATION TOO!

Significant medical history is recorded. Any history of sexual dysfunction is evaluated further. They are required to do a routine semen analysis check, which is usually done after 2-3 days of sexual abstinence. Basic  blood investigations along with STD screening is done.

THE  FINAL STEP.

After thorough evaluation of both partners is done, a customized treatment plan is made for the couple. Remember that you have the right to be knowledgeable about every stage of your treatment cycle. If at any stage you feel that the recommended procedure doesn’t suit your needs, please communicate with your fertility team. Trusting your doctor all throughout  the procedure will help you  begin this journey with faith and confidence.

All the best!
