There are many pros, just as they are, if you plan a long journey of pregnancy, 9 months in duration. By planning parenthood, it is made sure that all is well with the woman before she conceives, so that the baby is exposed to the right environment for ideal growth, and to confirm that the woman is medically fit to carry on the pregnancy, without it causing any harm to her. By this simple measure we can avoid babies being born with slow mentation, congenital abnormalities, congenital infections such as HIV, etc. We can also prevent a mother from having major complications due to undetected or uncontrolled hypertension or diabetes, etc. On the other hand, if a woman does not plan her pregnancy, she could cause harm to both her fetus and herself.
In order to plan parenthood, the couple will need to use an efficient contraceptive such as the pill or an intra uterine device (IUD). Both methods are extremely user friendly and could be utilized for long periods of time under medical supervision. Neither of the methods is dangerous, it is the wrong patients taking them which make the method derive its bad publicity. Any woman who needs any of these contraceptives should see her doctor and get investigated and examined prior to initiating their use. If used correctly and using all precautions, both these methods are excellent, and besides having contraceptive effect, they also can help to reduce excessive bleeding and abdominal cramps during a period. The pill also helps to reduce acne and excessive facial hair, preventing the formation of functional ovarian cysts and helping to regularize periods in women with irregular periods.
In other words, the pill is the greatest invention of this century which has given women the freedom to have a pregnancy by choice and not by chance! Using a contraceptive allows a woman to decide when she is ready to have a baby, allowing her the freedom to grow in her career so that an untimely pregnancy does not affect her upward move. An untimely pregnancy may become a reason for resentment between the couple or may end in an abortion. The only cons are that women may delay their pregnancies too long and may be ready to have a baby only at a later age when their ovaries are packing up.
Only a very small percentage of women are empowered with a choice of planning parenthood and these are women who are educated and in high profile careers. The majority of city women, even though educated but not in careers or business, depend on their husbands to make the choice of contraceptive, or in some cases even allow their mothers-in-law to decide when to have a baby! However, women in the rural areas of our country do not dare question the authority of their families, even if personally they are desperate to have some method of contraception because they get exhausted rearing so many children. Neither can they insist on their husbands to use condoms, nor can they exercise their right to say “no” to sex with their husbands. On the other hand, when women get pregnant pre-maritally, they undergo unsafe abortions which can cause severe infections leading to tubal damage, followed by infertility, ectopic pregnancies or even chronic pelvic pain. Sometimes, the severity of the infection may lead to death, especially because the unmarried girl does not wish to confide in anyone, even her parents.
Yes, there is more awareness than a decade ago, but there still is a huge gap in their knowledge of reproductive and sexual health. It is extremely important to promote contraception in our youth to prevent sexually transmitted infections cause havoc in their lives.
